Transformation in the People Next Door

The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. -- Matthew 4:16

We have expressed before that the people among whom we minister live much of their lives without hope, searching for answers to life's deepest problems.

The excitement bursting from us is only an overflow of the excitement bursting from the people with whom we recently were able to share gospel this month. We are not motivational speakers enough to initiate their reactions. The hope of Christ was.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!

Although she cannot pronounce it and has no understanding of its history
Rebekah was begging us all week to celebrate St. Patrick's Day
by wearing her "green bear" shirt and matching skirt.

We managed to hold out, though, until today.

And Rebekah obliged by just being cute
(and, despite the shirt, we're not sure how deep her "Irish roots" are,
although I think James has some Scottish in his blood).

She smelled mama's flowers...

And said they smelled like "strawberry medicine"

And just looked off the balcony to see what she could see in our neighborhood.

Like Mother, Like Daughter? Part Two

We have a nice view of our city from our third-story apartment, and
Kristie has a wicker rocking chair where she likes to sit and just relax.

Despite the chair's huge size and Rebekah's tiny frame,
some weekend mornings she just climbs up in it so she can be "like mommy."

Rebekah does not enjoy the relaxation part as much as Kristie does
(what 3 year old ever relaxes?)

But she rides the rocking chair like a wild bull in her imitations of Kristie.

A Scary Thought from South Asia

Kristie has been waiting for months to try a service available here in South Asia: Happy Feet.

We asked Rebekah if she wanted to go with Mommy to get this done, and our usually eager little companion inquired further. We told her the fish would eat her feet, and she quickly stated that she did not wish to participate.

We assured her it was not scary, that the fish actually ate the "crusty" part of the feet. She still was averse to the idea, though.

And despite the looks of Kristie and her companions Megan and Sha before they stuck their feet in the water, it was scarier than Kristie had originally planned.

Birthday Celebration #3

Can you guess what the "theme" of our party was? Surprisingly, you can find an amazing amount of Dora paraphernalia here, although some of the materials were imported.

Rebekah has had some serious birthday excitement through the years (see here, here, and here), and her first South Asian birthday party was no different.

Because Rebekah's third birthday was the same week as her friend, Maddy's, we had a joint party.

And party we did.

The People Upstairs

We have a small one-bedroom apartment above our apartment that is free most of the year (hint, hint, if you ever have thought of traveling to South Asia).

We had the pleasure to host our language teacher and his wife for 7 weeks over the winter, though, as we took an intensive language course.

Though we are from different sides of the globe, speak different languages, follow different religions, and have vastly different life experiences, "ChaCha" and "ChaChi" ("Uncle" and "Auntie", as Rebekah called them) now hold very special places in our hearts. We spent countless hours with them talking, laughing, and teaching them about good ol' Southern food.

Please pray for their needs as you remember to pray for our needs.

TCKs United: Maddy

Rebekah has gotten to spend a lot of time recently with another TCK (Third-Culture Kid) here in South Asia, Maddy. These girls were born 8 days apart, and sometimes act like they have been together ever since, even though they only met a couple months ago.

We thought we were going to have to wait until the teenage years for movie nights and giggling in the bed when they are supposed to be sleeping.

They are both playful girls, and combining their imaginations creates all sorts of fun situations.

We hope Maddy continues to have a positive influence on Rebekah, such as getting Rebekah to wear her hair in ponytails, which countless hours of reasoning from her mother can never accomplish.

Like Mother, Like Daughter?

Rebekah does not love naps like she used to. Daily she'll tell us she is "done sleeping" when she has in fact not closed her eyes yet. But if Rebekah doesn't nap, we don't get a lot accomplished.

On this day, however, Kristie finally wore Rebekah down at naptime...

And vice versa.

Really, South Asia? Part 5

We went to Darjeeling for the New Year for fun and family relaxation. While in the tourist city, we took in the normal tourist attractions, including the great restaurants catering to Western palates.

In a great Thai place, we did not expect to be greeted by this...

Don't get us wrong. We (yes, even Kristie) LOVE the Alien Versus Predator movies.

But the huge metal statue of Predator with Alien's head on his spear was pretty much the last thing we expected to see.

But even the mean old Predator's heart could be softened by a sweet little girl from the USA.
